Default A/C Compressor Screech

Yesterday, the a/c compressor started screeching. Like the thing was not turning, but it was. Not frozen in place and the belt slipping. Same sound. But the compressor was turning, but a terrible screeching sound coming from internal (?). Sounds like not good news. Oh, not cool air either.

Mine did that years ago. The problem was the clutch. I took the belt off and it's been off since.

Does sound like the clutch. You can replace just the clutch, but a better bet would be to replace the whole compressor and recharge(and re-oil) the system.

Had the very same thing happen to me.....replaced just the clutch....eventually had to repalce the whole compressor....should have done that to begin with....would have been cheaper in the long run.

If the sound truly was internal, then the compressor is junk.
Hook up gauges and pressures will tell you what's going on.
Evacuate system, remove oriface tube and check screen for debris. If any at all, then each componant has to be flushed properly and the compressor, oriface tube and dryer have to be replaced at minimum.

That's what someone at church told me.

Now to save up the shekels.
