Bad *** sounding 383! Almost sounds like the engine is kicking back against the starter due to distrib advance issues. Did you try backing off timing a little?
I don't know if this will help you at all but here goes. I had the same problem with my 11:1 383 in my S15 Jimmy. I fragged a starter and a flexplate because the starter would kick back or the motor would start, backfire, spit flame and die. Turns out in my case the ACCEL 300+ ignition box and the Pertronix ignition module weren't compatible. Ironically, it didn't work with the ACCEL ignition module either. When I would disconnect the box everything was fine so I thought I had a bad box. I swapped boxes with my Vette and the Vette ran fine but the truck was still jacked. I changed to an MSD digital module which I have in my Vette (with an ACCEL 300+) and it solved the problem. Evidently the MSD module and the 300+ box are compatible. So it could be a parts compatibility problem thats causing a timing problem.
