My M21 won’t go into gear at times. The clutch feels and sounds OK and the shifter works fine most of the time. Every once in a while it won’t go into any gear, after I have come to a complete stop. I have to shut the car off, and then I can put it in gear and go. Very intermittent any help would be great.
Thanks
Is the gear shift kinda sloppy or tight? Also, will it "Force" into gear? Does the shifter need a rebuild kit? Reason is mine does the same thing, only I don't need to turn the car off, I know the shifter needs a rebuild.
I think you should give up and just give the car to me. Ok, I had a similar problem on a daily driver once and it was the throwout bearing. this was a car with a hydraulic clutch, so maybe it's not pertinent here, just a suggestion.
This sounds familiar.... in fact, I started a similar thread. Have you tried reverse when you can't get it into gear? Sometimes I can't get it to go into any forward gear, but reverse will work, and then 1st works.

put your car on jack stands and have some one go through the gears with the enigine off and look at the linkages perhaps you have one that is hanging up because of a lost retaining clip or a broken bushing etc
I've come to the conclusion after reading many threads on these forums related to the same issue... that people either want to ignore the possibilty of a poor clutch release or maybe don't understand how a clutch works.
If you grind in reverse, that means that the transmission IS STILL TURNING. If at an idle while the car is good and warm you press down on the clutch pedal and count to 10, then put it in reverse and it still grinds... you have a clutch release issue. If you can shut the car off and get it into gear, but not while it is running.... again a release issue. Think about it, read up on what a clutch actually does.
Poor clutch release is the biggest problem for prematurely wearing out synchros in a transmission. They will work up to a point and actually break a dragging clutch disc loose. However the heat that the ring sees while working hard, actually warps the ring and prevents a clean shift. It is a viscious cycle. You rebuild the transmission and 2 weeks later you get the same problem because the synchros get overheated and warp.

Chaching! It took my transmission guy 4 throwout bearings to figure that one out. You don't ever get a real whiny sound do you? I mean a sound that will make you cry.
