Guys I just picked up my vette from the trans shop with my new six speed installed. I didn't have the facilities or necessary tools to do the swap myself, but my wife who managed a body shop a few years back recommended me to a transmission shop here in town. I purchased the trans used a few years ago and thought that I should go through it and upgrade the shift fork as I've been recommended to do. He was a good ole boy and quoted me to rebuild it and asked who was putting it in for me. I told him I was still working on that and explained there was a lot of custom work that had to be done. He said I enjoy those projects and asked would I mine leaving it on his rack for a few months and he would work on it when he could. Well it being winter I didn't mind at all. If anyone is interested I will take some pictures of crossmember modification he made and any specific questions your welcome to PM. Anyway I picked the car up today and it worked great. I have several more modifications to make to the interior and I'm going to purchase the offset shifter plate. The car had been sitting for almost three months and it does need to be tuned up, but I can't tell you how awesome it was to hit the interstate and actually pass someone while never hitting 3000rpm. Granted I will say the sixth gear is for extreme driving and may not be needed but I did cruise in sixth at around 2200 rpm for a while but to accelerate you really have to downshift. As soon as I can get the A/C (Vintage or HR?) installed I'm really looking forward to some long cruises this summer!!
I'm in sales and headed out today so give me until the weekend to put some pics and info together. To get around the clutch issue, I purchased the adapter plate and input shaft from Fortes Parts for around $450.00. This allowed me to utilized my existing clutch setup, I chose this route because I installed a new Centerforce II Clutch and pressure plate not too long ago and I didn't want to start over. I really wanted the Hydro clutch but I went with the easiest and least expensive. I will get some pics posted but the crossmember was cut just outside the exhaust and he slid it back about 8 inches and welded pieces from that location back to the crossmember and he used bolts to attach it so it is now removable. The Shifter sits so far back that it actually hits the emergency brake handle going into second gear. I will be ordering a Viper shifter offset which will put it close to where the original was. I'm headed out of town, more details later this week.
