Default Headlight problem on my '82

I have a problem with my headlights. The left side always opens and closes before the right side and locks open with a "click" sound. I assume this is normal operation. The right side is always slower and doesn't make that "click" noise after opening and I can push it down with my hand. Of course it'll pop back up when I release my hand though. What's causing the right side to not lock open like the left side and why is it slower?

Check the rubber bellows around the actuator rod. If this is cracked or not properly attached, it will leak and cause poor operation. They get harder with age and will crack and leak.

Good question. On my 82 the left side opens first then the right side. When closing the left side closes first then the right side. It's kind of funny because the left will completely open and close before the rightside moves. The only thing that I can think of is under the nose of the car there is suppose to be to vaccum relays that operate the headlights. My car only has one installed and both headlights work off the one relay. So I am thinking there is not enough vaccum pressure comming off the one relay to open and close the headlights at the same time. This is just my theory though. The clicking noise you are hearing is probably your headlight being out of adjustment or a worn or missing nylon bushing in the pivot bracket. My headlights open with more of a bump noise. Do not push your headlights down by hand. You could/will eventually damage the diaphram and seals. You could also have a small vaccum leak. I had a ripped witches hat on the left side actuator that affected the operation of the right side headlight. The actuator are easy to remove and removal, repair and reinstallation only takes about an hour.

Good luck at let me know what you find.

Sounds like you may need an actuator shaft seal.

yup thats the seal. Buy two and two new dust boots and replace them on both actuators that way you dont have to worry about the other one going bad soon. That should solve the vaccum leak (unlees you have a leaking vaccum line) but the clicking noise is a differant issue I think.

The last detail in atlanta has the seals for around $7.00
