Default steering wheel telescope?

ok so i yanked my wheel last weekend with the intention of changing it out and repainting some column parts. so i unbolt the horn piece that sits above the wheel and i loosen one bolt on the wheel and bam! the telescope feature i didnt know i had pops out 2 inches. no biggie kinda like this option. now...how the hell do i get it to stop moving in and out!

If you are talking about the star bolt in the middle with the 2 screws in it, you just tighten to the right and the column will stop moving in and out. If you did what I did and tilted the column up with the star screw out of the column you probably lost the 3" or so rod that goes into the hole under the screw. Without the rod in place the column will just push in and out.

BTW, Tilt/Tele is a very desirable option. Columns sell for several hundred $.

Before you do anything else, read Jim Shea's papers on steering column repair!

Here is the AIM blowup of your T&T steering wheel, horn, and telescope parts. The LEVER 459083 is the part that you rotate clockwise to unlock and counterclockwise to lock the telescoping feature of your T&T column.

The STAR SCREW fits down through the LEVER 459083 and threads into the end of the STRG COLUMN steering shaft. The rod that was mentioned is down inside the steering column shaft. It can fall out if the STAR SCREW is not threaded into the end of the steering shaft.

The two SCREWS 9420455 thread into the LEVER 459083. There are multiple locations that allow adjustment of the lever to lock and unlock the telescoping function. I use a phillips screwdriver to tighten the STAR SCREW so that the telescope function is locked. Then I attach the lever to the STAR SCREW with the finger bump on the LEVER adjusted to clockwise. Now when I rotate the LEVER to the left the telescoping feature unlocks.

Jim
