If you have an early C3, then you are exempt from needing smog inspections in California. Only cars made in 1976 and later are required to get smog certs in CA.

Correct. If you're trying to help the environment, buy a Prius. Otherwise, you don't need to add a cat.
Cats are required in Canada IF the car came orginally with them. It is an automatic $450 fine if a visual inspection shows no cats.
Since my exhaust is 3 inch I just bought a pair of high flow 3 inch cats, cut the pipe and welded them in place. They are right behind the crossmember. Since my crossmember is knotched, no longer use the holes the exhaust can be dropped as one piece.
Since you live in Calif., I'm sure you are well aware that cats aren't required, so there must be other reasons you want to do this. I put cats on my '72 recently behind the cross member because I don't want a Prius, and for other reasons. So far they have worked out great. I did add insulation above where they hang and welded an additional metal heat shield to the top of the cats.
You always hear that the only dumb question is the one that's not asked. I believe that has just been disproven.
If you beat up on everyone who asks a question that YOU think is dumb, then there will be no questions. Maybe he wants to do his part for the environment.

I have a '77 with dual cats. They are just about the same place Norval put his. I don't have to have them either, so I guess the consensus opinion is I'm stupid. They don't seem to hurt performance much.

As for the others, thanks for your helpful and intelligent responses(not!) Wow I didn't know that I didn't need them in California, thanks!
I'm just trying to clean it up a bit. I figure I could make it pretty reasonable using cats in conjunction with my Gen 7 DFI. I've ridden in some pretty quick C4's with full smog equip. I don't think it will kill the power that much. The problem is where to fit them in.

Thanks for the photos!
You're right, they don't hurt performance much, if at all. Hats off to you and the others who want to clean it up a bit. It's good to see there are some folks who are just as concerned about the environment as their 1/4 mile times.
