Is there anyway to determine the approximate stall from the size of the converter? I have a GM (supposedly high stall) converter that came with the rebuilt TH350 I bought at a swap meet. Only marking are faded magic marker that says "GM HS" - what would HS mean in factory GM terms?

There is no way to determine the stall, even a ballpark figure, purely going by the diameter, unless it is still in 100 percent stock form. Units that have been rebuilt by an aftermarket supplier can have any one of a number of internal alterations that can alter the rating, sometimes somewhat radically.
"HS" in magic marker is not the sort of thing that was done at the factory, but I suppose that whoever wrote it there intended for it to mean "High Stall".

I am going strictly by memory, but I believe the higher stall version of the full size thm350 converter came in at around 2000 rpms. The only change from the much, much more common "standard" version (which came in at around 1800) was a different impeller.
