I have a orange/Green wire coming through the firewall, in front of the driver, goes down the firewall about 6" then to a wire connector, from there seems to go to the drivers side of the trany..... Why do I not know what this is for??? Well, someone b4 me, spliced the orange wire (could be red) just before and after the connector, attached a seperate wire to each spliced piece and then ran them over the fender and through the door opening and under the dash to where the wiper switches are under the steering wheel.. They are not connected to any switch, just hanging there..... Caught my eyes as the wires are seen from the outside of the vette, and hanging under the Steering wheel...... What would these be for and any Ideas as to why someone would want to personally control power?
I believe this is the plug for the backup lights switch mounted on the tranny. Wire colors are green and pink, may look orange from age and dirt. I just had a thread about this, as my wires are missing also.

Thanks... I will check it out.... Not sure why they would take both wires from the trany, up to and through the fire wall, not to mention, why would anyone want to splice and control the back up lights from inside???
Thanks for the help... Something for me to look into.
i agree - the wires should be green and pink and for the back up lamp switch. my wires were cut on my car - I still need to get a new switch to replace it for my car
What switch would it have went to? Somewhere under the dash or shifter or???
Besides... They spliced it at the connector inside the motor compartment, then took both ends into the cab... and turned it on and off in there at somesome point. Could it have been stuck on the ON position and they needed to disconnect power for some reason? Because that is all they would be doing by doing this, they did not bypass any swith, just the connector.
Switch is on the left side of the trans at the rear of the cover. A small rod connects to the reverse lever and pushes the switch when shifted in reverse.
I'll have to double check this and will try to get some pictures as soon as my batteries recharge.
Those 2 wires originaly went down to a switch mounted on the transmission, one of them would have 12 volts the other would be basicly a return (hot when the trans. was shifted into reverse)
When the switch went bad alot of people took both wires back into the motor compartment then into the car and mounted a toggle switch usualy under the dash. That way they could flip the switch before backing up or in most cases while getting the car inspected.
Sounds like the Back-up lights might have been stuck on.... then when he wanted the lights to work, he connected the two wires.. The green was untouched.... the pink, was cut above and below the connector.... one wire was spliced to the top piece, another wire to the bottom section, then those two wires were taking into the car.. so the circuit could be complete when he wanted it to be.
Trust me.... this Vette has me scratching my head a lot! Why would a vette have the motor changed to a rare 302 motor within 4 years of it's life? Why would the new person have it only 4 years then never drive it again, then I have these issues?? Wierd! It was stored since 1977, johnstown floods caused the owner not to drive it with the roads so messed up. But to never get it out again????
This is what I am faced with... I guess once the motor is completly installed and I put some juice to it, I could test and find out the reason, but kinda wierd, trashy way of dealing with stuff... Now I did with my 70 VW in the day... lol..... But would never do it to a vette! lol

These are the best pics of what I used to have on my 70. You can see the switch mounted on the tranny and the linkage to the reverse lever. Maybe this will be of some help.
