Is there any trick to getting the auto shift **** off? I got the pushbutton and the spring out, tried twisting the **** the same way with no luck. Put some WD40 where the spring was (also lots of gunk there as well, hit it with 70% alochol first to take off gunk). Let the
WD40 sit for about 10min, still wont even budge. I tried taking some thin medical rubber and tried pliers with no luck. How the hell do I get this thing off?
I stumbled upon some big vice grips which did the trick, even with the rubber they messed the ball up though. Good thing I still have some things to order.
Thanks anyway, maybe this will help someone else whose **** is stuck. BRUTE FORCE AND LEVERAGE
Are you sure if you're loosening or tightening the ****?
Right = Tight
Left = Loose.
Sometimes it's easy to forget.
If you are doing that correctly, you may want to try spraying some PB Blaster instead of WD-40. WD - 40 is a good lubricant, PB Blaster is a better rust dissolver/loosening agent.
I had a little trouble with mine too. I wore a leather driving glove to get a good grip on it and it finally turned. I also found that stuff like that seems to come loose easier if it's cold. I work on my car in a heated garage, and it seemed like PB Blaster and a night with the heat off and the next morning any previously "stuck" bolt or screw came right off.
Be gentle, treat it as it were attached to you. Brut force is what screws thinks up. Enjoy life, vetttes, yourself, and you family.....
It should screww right off (counter-clockwise)....
brute force with some WD40 was all it took. I'm not even sure the WD40 reached it. In the threads was some rust, which was probably what gave me the trouble. At some point im pretty sure the tops were left off a few times with some rain. I've seen evidence of it all over the place, lots of stripped screws because of it as well. Once I got it to move it came out fairly easily.
What I did to get mine off was to use some thin surgical rubber, about 2mm thick. Wrapped that around it, and use the biggest vice grips I could find. Even with the rubber it scratched up the **** a bit. It was worn out and needed replacing anyway though.
