Turn the ignition to "on" but do not start the car. Make sure the check engine light is on.

Remove the ashtray. get a paper clip and bend it into a "U" shape. Insert the paper clip in the slots Jumping pins A and B on the connector. thats the two pins closest to the driver side. They should be marked A and B.

Once the paper clip is in. The check engine light will flash...pay attention...anyway it will flash once....pause and flash twice faster....that means code 12. It will flash this code twelve 3 times to signal its in the check code mode. Only after that will the storted trouble codes flash. So a code 43 will be 4 flashes followed by a brief pause then three flashes. The system will flash all trouble codes. Example code 43 then code 21 etc. It will flash code 12 at the end 3 times to signal its done checking.

Post the codes once you know them.

The code was a 43. I believe thats spark timing system. Now what do I check?
When I got the car I had a problem with the injector fuse and While I was driving the car it ran terrible and the check engine light came on, Am I correct in assuming the knock sensor picked up on it detonating and thats why it's on?? The only thing i can't fiqure out is 2 days ago I took the car for a drive and For the first time since then the engine light went off and it ran strong and the next day i went out to drive it and as soon as It ran for a few moments the check engine light came on and it runs terrible again. I do not know what to check???

Code 43 is a new one for me. It could be a few things. Pulling the fuse in the battery compartment near the ECM resets the computer. Do it for 30 seconds.

Sound like it only does it some time??? May be a bad connection.

Code 43 is Fuel Injection Electronic spark Control (ESC). How are your electrical skills? There are a bunch of test in the book.

Check the white connector at the ECM....make sure the contacts are clean. Pin 4 is the critical one. According to the book it could be a bad connection, bad knock sensor, bad ECM or bad ESC connector or controller.

I'll scan the page and post it.

According to "Haynes" the code 43 also is malfunction of the TPS Throttle Position Sensor. I had this code some years ago and after a lot of troubble I replaced the TPS with a new one at the shop and all my troubble was gone. The replacement it self is not complicated but its very tricky to find the exact position to adjust it and the Chevrolet shop has all the computers and gauges to get it right. Its worth the money. The TPS was only about 50 or so in your currency. I live in Sweden ! Good Luck ! Peter

TPS is code 21 and 22 according to the shop manual. 43 is definitely ESC. Doesn't matter anyway...he has a code 42 not 43...check his other thread.

Thanks Jim ! Wasn´t aware of his other thread !
For your information Haynes code 43 has two (!) explanations :

#1
"TPS out of adjustment. Engine must run at least 10 seconds to set this code, also see below"

#2
"(1982 only)The ESC retard signal has been on for too long or the voltage is too low"

According to Haynes code 21 and 22, as you say it is in the shop manual. also referes to TPS troubble. High respectively low voltage in TPS signal.

Springtime is Vettetime in Sweden! But I drive my beauty all year ! Hope you can too !
