So earlyer today while driving i noticed my speedo was acting funny i came home and turned off my car, turned it back on and went for a drive again but this time the needle stayed at 0........any thoughs on this?
Just replaced my speedo & cable this week. I had to pull the entire dash out and it was more than I bargained for. If I were you I would pull the cable off the trans. & see if it spins freely & if it moves the needlle on the speedo. If it does not then I would say your going to have to pull the dash out to get at the speedo to see if the cable or the speedo is the culprit. The cable is cheap but the speedo was close to 260 bucks. My car is a 70 so while I had the dash out I replaced the light switch & all the individual dash light bulbs as preventative maintenance. good luck.
Do the cable first - it is your likely culprit - you don't have to tear the dash apart to do it - just unclip at the back of the speedo. Test it with a drill, if it spins freely then it is OK, if not you know your problem.
last time that happened to me, the speedo mechanism had bound up and snapped off the end of the cable that connects to the speedo. I needed to rebuild the speedometer mechanism
What people suggested is what I'd do, but I'd unscrew it from the transmission, then chuck that end up in a drill, I believe in reverse, then spin the drill, have someone watch the speedo to see if it works. If it does, you know your problem is in the transmission.

DITTO!! I just went through this with my '70. When I pulled the gear out I failed to notice that it was worn just enough to prevent mesh with the speedo drive gear. I wound up pulling the dash top and (unnecessarily) replacing the cable, cracking my pristine 37 year-old dash pad in the process of reinstalling it. AAAGGGHH!!! Of course I eventually figured out that my driven gear was the culprit. Nine bucks vs. thirty-something for the cable and two hundred thirty something for a new dash pad. Hope you read this before it's too late....
