I'm getting ready to pull the transmission on my 75 4speed for the first time. Does anyone have any tips or anything thats weird about the removal on these cars?
It's a fairly simple process. Remove the entire shifter and bracket assembly. Then trans mount (support the back of the engine to take the load off the trannie mount). Remove speedo cable. Disconnect backup light switch wires. Remove drive shaft. Unbolt trannie from bell and slide it back far enough so the input shaft clears the bell. Note that you may have to lower the engine slightly to get the trannie to slide back far enough to clear the bell. Lower the front of the trans and slide it out/down. I've had mine out so many times, I can usually do it in an hour working alone.
well i managed to get it most of the way out, but i forgot to take the shifter assembly out before i tried to take the tranny out of the bell housing and now the input shaft is 3/4 of the way out stuck in a weird spot inside the bell housing and i cant get it back in the right way so i can go back and take the shifter all the way out. would dropping the bellhousing help or just make things worse? anything else I could do short of cutting out the crossmember? (I'm wishing they made the manuals w/ a removable cossmember right about now)
