Im considering installing a small dist. for my TPI set up. I got all the parts form a late 80's pick up with high miles!. Will this thing even fit? should I worry about the high miles?,or any thing else? My engine has low miles on it. Any heads up on this?
I'm not a TPI pro.
Regarding distributor only ... yes it'll fit ... if shaft/endplay's sloppy, tighten it up ... I'd go ahead & replace the pickup coil inside distributor ... get one at local parts store.
That's the same setup I have. Just adjust the endplay on the distributor, MOROSO and Mr Gasket make shims I believe. I would put a new module in it just because. Get a module for an 89 IROC and it should have a higher rev limit than the truck. Most of the harness makers have an adapter harness for large car to small cap, I got mine from Howell. Street and Performance probably has one too. You will have to trim the plug boots a little if you keep the large car wires, they extend closer to the cap. Other than that it should bolt right in.
Oh, 1 more thing-be sure you have the right gear for the cam you have or it may get eaten up. If you have a facrory roller cam, use the gear for an 89 IROC which is a roller motor. If you don't have a roller cam, use the gear for an 87 truck. Also, small cap and large cap distributor gears do not interchange, the large cap has a larger shaft.
