Starter Shims (help)
Screwed up this weekend when I realized I threw away the shims for my new MDS starter. I've sent an email to MSD to see if they can send a new set...but just in case, I'm trying to see if I can get these from a local auto parts store.
Can anyone help me figure out what the part number would be from Autozone or NAPA? Here is a shot of the starter I installed on my 1980 L48 manual.

Thanks... I can't get into the gear/flywheel area to easily check the fit..but the symptoms are as though it is too tight... stock starter worked just fine. Installed MDS and now it turns over but then slows down and speeds up again as it turns over...also sounds like it is having some difficulty with disengaging.

Sound like I need a shimor two to you?
Yep. Can you stick in a wire gauge with the bendix engaged, flywheel cover off?

Can definitely get a wire gage in but could not get the bendix engaged to test. Thus, reasoning for inserting a shim and increasing until binding is relieved.

This sounds like something I would do. (and have done with other items.) Usually after I do something like this, I lose patience, my inner-bubba comes out, and, well... the fix is worse than the problem. This is why I left my car with my mechanic on Saturday with the GMPP part number for a new mini-starter.
