Driveline losses.....
All these crate engine companies advertise their engines with optimum horsepower at the flywheel. But what does it relate to in reality at the rear wheels, and what sort of times are possible on the strip.
I'm guessing at a 30% loss in my 68 vette with a TH400.
So a 383 rated at 475hp (flywheel, with no acessories) may be able to offer about 330hp at the rear wheels with an auto gearbox. Is that about right, or are the losses greater?
For those guys who have run a new crate engine on a chassis dyno, what were your results.
And what sort of times and trap speed have you managed on the strip?
mph at end of quarter is usually a good indicator of actual horsepower.
If I want to run consistent mid 12's in a 68 convertible, how much rear wheel horsepower would I need..... would a 450hp 383 be sufficient?
(2800 rpm stall converter and M/T tyres are available too)
Is there a thread on this site which summarises 1/4 mile times and rear wheel horsepower figures?
cheers
tom
C5 would be 16% for an auto and 13% for a manual
A C6Z would be 7% but we all know that
