I'm wanting to put a set of roller tip rockers on my L81 engine. The engine has a cam in it but I'm not sure on the specs of it. My question is can I put 1.6 rollers on without a problem and do they need to be self aligning or do I need to use guide plates? thanks for any info you can offer.
i would be leary of doing this simply because your not aware of exactly what kind of cam you have. if you end up with to much lift, you gonna hit something. also ive read several articles from real engine builders and there seems to be a trend only to use 1.6 on the intake side.
it's unlikely that you'll run into valve to piston clearance issues on a stock L-81 bottom end. the stock pistons are dished and valve reliefed. i ran 1.6 rockers on my old engine with a .486 advertised lift for a couple years before the engine grenaded.
i would worry more about spring condition than clearance issues. you may want to try and get a little stiffer than stock springs. not to mention the stockers are probably pretty sloppy right about now.
I'm betting it won't be worth the trouble. The roller tips actually slide across the valve tips and picking up a few thousandths of lift isn't going to make enough difference to feel or measure, IMHO.

If that's the only thing you're changing out you probably won't notice the difference enough for it to have been worth it.
I guess I need to post more info the I'm already have headers and sidepipes a cam of unknown specs edelbrock performer intake and maybe new roller rockers if it makes sense. I have a noisey lifter so I thought this would be a good time to replace the rocker arms at this time.
