I'm installing Hooker headers on my '72 sb and my plan is to route the plug wires either over the valve covers or along the bottom of them and then down to the plugs using looms to hold them in place. I think that I should be looking for some high temp shielded or insulated wires. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
I like to keep them simple and a clean looking engine done with universal sets and 90 degree plug ends. Attach to the plug and run them underneath and up the back to the distrubutor shorting them if necessary at the cap. Early Vettes use the same locations but under shielding. Camaros are merely 'Baby Vettes' and you can get the idea from here even with the 2 1/4 primaries there is all kinds of clearance from the hot pipes......
I used MSD 8.5 mm wires and a loom bracket from Summit. I was going to use heat shields or boots but since the wires are very secure, I think I will do without.
I burned through 4 sets of "high temp" plug wires when I had stainless steel block hugger headers. I switched to full length ceramic coated headers and Jacobs's 8.5mm ceramic spark plug wires. They are pricie, but I expect them to last much longer.
Here's a look at the ceramic boots from below:
This pic shows a ball milled wire loom to match my valve covers. (Vortec heads = center bolt valve covers.) The wire loom is made to attach to side bolt valve covers, but mine have c.b. adaptors. I had the heat shields left over from previous wire sets and put them on to protect the wires themselves, not the boots.
