Default Stupid steering column question!

I finally changed out my rotten steering wheel yesterday for a new repro and now I have a question about the column. I have assumed that I only have tilt and not the telescopic option, but when changing out the wheel yesterday I removed a "star" shaped screw with two set screws from the center of the column and the assembly moved back as though I have tele feature. What its the deal here? When I put the screw back in everything was locked back in place. This one sort of has me feeling stupid!!

Sounds like its tilt-tele to me. Install the star head bolt just loose, then install the two small screws. You should then be able to turn the collar to lock the tele wheel.

67/8 were tele only, 69 got the tilt tele option.
There should be some sort of collar with a lever which attaches to the star wheel to allow you to lock it when the column is assembled.

I've got a crappy Haynes manual and it shows me nothing. This being the only Vette I've owned I don't have anything to compare to. When the Haynes manual shows the steering column it shows something like a Caprice.

I just replaced the steering wheel on mine, ran into the same problem with diagrams as you have.
I found a pretty good diagram I think on this forum, I'll check and post a link.
The factory manual doesn't cover this very well either.

If I remember correctly the star headed screw has 6 scoops removed that the two little screws can line up with, that's for adjustment.

Screw the star screw in finger tight, the column should lock, back off about 1/8 turn and install the screws to lock the star screw in place. The "Lever" the round external lock ring with the rectangular tang should be pointing straight up.

Pushing that tang to the right should lock the steerin column from moving in or out. Pushing to the left should unlock. Adjust the "pretension" on the star headed screw to allow the column to move in and out and still lock.

I can take pictures of mine tonight if you need that.

Tony, the instructions were perfect. I now have tilt/tele instead of just tilt. Thanks!

Maybe this drawing from the AIM will help. For some reason, the artist forgot to show the big spring that is part of #12 Lower Horn Contact.
