Don't know what it would be called other than a hose guard. Just a thought...when I bought my 69, it had the wrong radiator and an incorrect upper hose. The hose came REAL close to the fan. It was a real Bubba rigged system. The previous owner had used a Campbell's soup can...split down the middle. He wrapped the can around the hose and secured it with duct tape to keep the fan from cutting the hose. Putting in the correct radiator with the correct hose solved my problem. Hope this helps. Chuck

Re: upper radiator hose guard (paul79)
My 1979 does not have a guard, metal or otherwise. Can you be more specific? The hose can hit the timing chain as it is enclosed in a cover.
I think he means the belt that drives the alternator. On some cars, with the original design hose, the upper hose comes REALLY close to the alternator belt. You have the piece he is talking about in your photo. It is on the alternator support arm, the small piece of metal that sticks out above the belt. I will post a photo of how close mine is.
Bseery and poster. Here is another view. It is a metal guard that prevents the alternator belt from hitting the upper rad hose. I do not have a name for it, however. Print out the pics and take to GM dealer or send/take to Corvette salvage yard if you are looking for one.
P.S.-The hose should not "fall." It is fairly rigid. What can happen is that the alternator belt becomes too loose and flies "up" and slices the rad hose.

Chuck, that is so sloppy!!! Duct tape???? I achieved a much cleaner installation using aluminum tape to secure the campbell's soup can. I also CHALLENGE whether yours was actually an authentic Campbells soup can. Once the original label is removed it is nearly impossible to distinguish an original Campbells Soup can from Lipton, or a can of dog food for that matter! In my case, as the original installer, I know it is a Campbell's Soup can! I also have the proper upper radiator hose. I installed the shield to prevent the hose from rubbing against the shroud, plus I like the look! :) MJ
Darn! I cant get to my homepage to show you a pic of my shiny "mmmm good" upper rad hose guard!! :)

So, you mean that only authentic Campbells soup cans are Bubba correct, or Bubba approved, for this kind of job? Oh boy, now Bubbas have gotten into the number matching business... :jester
BTW, I don't have that gadget on my car. I'll check the AIM later to see if it was supposed to be there.
Mine broke off on its own about two years ago. No longer make the guard for my year. So I bubba'd it and bought an L-bracket, slid a piece of bicycle tire over it, and bolted into place. May be a bubba, but it is a good bubba. You hardly notice it, and then, only if looking for it. Best of all, keeps hose from whatever might force if down onto the belt. Now if the belt breaks and wraps itself around the hose, that's another topic.
