Default Reverse Lights Issue

My reverse wires were cut by the previous owner, but I found the corrector coming out of the firewall, and there is enough wire left on the tranny switch to splice into so it's not that big of a deal. I figured out the pink wire is hot, the green wire goes back to the reverse bulbs. The thing is my pink wire seems to not be switched to the ignition, it still shows 12v on my meter with the key off. This would mean if I hooked it up, my reverse lights would still be on after I shut off the car. Any idea how that would happen?

If you are measuring before the switch then the switch will be the current interrupter. Maybe the switch was bad and the PO did not want to replace it. (Bubba)

Hmmm...looking at the wiring diagram, the pink wire comes out of the fuse box and goes to the switch. It looks like the switch just breaks the circuit as it passes back to the rear. There is different wiring for auto vs. manual. The auto has the pink wire going to the shift mechanism.
