I also have a '68 and I just got through disassembling and repainting the console plate. I did not see a "spring" that you mention on the astray door. Only a small metal "stop". BTW, my ashtray door did not slide open by itself. Have you checked the 2 plastic "slides" that go on either side of the astray door for excessive wear? It could also be that the screws that hold that part of the assembly on the underside of the console plate need tightening. I hope this helps.

There is a spring metal clip that has "teeth" that grip the end of the ashtray door. It just snaps on the end of the door. A raised tang on the clip drags on the underside of the console plate to provide enough friction to keep the ashtray door from sliding open on its own (such as in the case of rapid acceleration ).

You can't see the clip without removing the entire console plate and I'd be willing to bet that many of them have fallen off over the years.

I think Paragon still carries these clips. I seem to remember that's where I bought mine. These aren't specific just to '68.

The plastic slides on my 68 (new, repro) create so much friction that a good hard pull is required to pull the door plate open.

That is exactly what I meant to say, but could not articulate it in that manner. BTW, I believe Corvette Central also carries the clip too.

Thanks 427-390. There is a place called Corvette World about 1000 yards from my house and I already purchased the spring from them but didnt know where it went. Its great to have a Corvette parts place so close and to have information from the forum in such a speedy manner. It almost makes me invincible for the moment.....
