Hello, In the rebuilding of my 68 I thought it would be nice to reset the odometer to zero miles. I plan on keeping this car and would not pass it off as anything other than mileage unknown. Since I have the dash out now would be the time to do this.
Have any of ya'll done this? If so what's the procedure?
Actually very easy to do once the speedo is in your hands. Look at how the number wheels are mounted. Using a small screwdriver it is very easy to roll the wheels to where ever you want them. Be aware tho, that in some states, this procedure is illegal. Just don't misrepresent your mileage (or why you did what you did) when you sell that car as that is even worse......
I would not decieve anyone about the mileage, I was thinking it would be nice to start out with zero miles. There's no telling what the original miles are on this project.
I had thought about doing the same thing. My '69 looked much like yours in that I also did a body off. But then I thought 'so what.' Sort of like having a face lift then saying you were only one year old. You can never be young again. So I just put the odo back in with 68,000 on it. Figure the car has gone 250,000 in thirty years. Who’s counting anyway?
Well, I tried to reset the miles but I can't get the numbers to budge. I even used a drill to run the odometer. The trip miles would turn but the odometer numbers would not budge. Looks like I'm stuck with 79,770.
There's nothing illegal about resetting your speedo to zero. It's just illegal to represent it as original mileage. I reset my odometer to zero a while ago. It's pretty self explanatory when you get the speedo out. Just rotate the numbers to zero and replace. There are some gears and small metal guides. Just remember what they looked like before you disassemble - a picture helps...
Good luck -
