Default HEI Distributor/coil advice please

Looks like I need a new cap and rotor, red dust under the rotor.

Thumbing through a Summit catalog I see a couple of GM HEI tune up kits. Proform has one for $80.00 and includes cap, rotor, 50,000 volt coil, adjustable vacuum advance unit, and some other stuff. Would this be a good upgrade? or just get a new cap and rotor for $20.00. Is the more coil volts a good thing or a bad thing?

Thanks for your advice.

Get a new GM cap and rotor. Stock coil is fine for stock motor. Adjustable vacuum advance is trash. IMHO

that is the set up i am using.....but i wound up tossing the adjustable vacuum unit for a regular one that pulls at low vacuum. my next cap will be a "corrected wire set up"

Sounds like the pins the weights pivot on are worn and possibly the plastic pads gone.

Some pieces of the plastic pads are missing. And, yes, looks like the pins are worn. You are a genious. I assume I can get new pins (or their portion of the distributor) from my GM Dealer?

About 25 years ago I put a HEI advance curve kit in a Trans Am I had, maybe I should do that here as well, but not sure if it comes with new pins, etc. Any advice would sure be appreciated.

Don't stroke Noonie too much. It will swell his head.

Your local auto parts store may have the curve kit too. If your pins aren't worn real bad the plastic bushings in the kit and the lighter springs (black or silver) should be all you need. Lars recommends you keep the stock weights. Also make sure everything is moving freely.

Go to local parts store that sells "Standard Ignition" brand from Standard Motor Products Co ... common, old-line brand ... HEI pins are P/N DG-50, HEI plastic bushings are DG-54. These folks have about the best HEI modules (dyna-mod) & coils out there http://www.performancedistributors.com/index.html

Where do you get new plastic pads at? I'm assuming this is what you are talking about, right?
