Looks good, but voltage should be about 13 volts.
Just double check the voltages. This time rev the engine and hold it at about 1500rpm to make sure it's charging. If the cars voltmeter reads different, I would trust your handheld voltmeter.

Reason: addition
Alternator should put out about 13v to charge the battery and power the accessories. Sometimes the alternator doesn't fully charge until it gets over 1000 rpm. Check your voltage when the engine is over 1000rpm.
any suggestions on how I can test the gauge. I will be testing the hand meter on the car at the higher RPMS. Will report later tonight. Thank you for your help...Garys 68!!

I followed post #44 but engine was at 1400rpm's. The output was 11.9 and the sensor was 11.6. My gauge in car still showed 15ish. Any final suggestions before I would like to put this Post to rest!!!!!
I'm Back!!!!! Little stubborn and really want the guage to work properly. I finally purchased a new gauge. I install it and it pegs. I reinstall the original and its back to the 15ish reading. This is driving me nuts but the detective in my wants to find the problem. Any suggestions...I do have the gauges apart. Can it be the circuit board?
I have been running into similar problems. I describe my problem as my volt gauge spiking. It will read normal buty then spike to the red zone. When this happens my stereo shuts down. If I start turning on accessories the volts drop back down. I had autozone do their little charging system check and they reported everything appeared to show good, but my battery was only showing 4 amps while the car was running. After talking to the alternator people they suggested I replace the two prong plug. I did that and it got worse. I have done everything else that I know to do but take the alterantor off and have the voltage regulator replaced and after reading this thread the diodes as well. One other thing. I drive it every couple of weeks and since this problem started I have had to jump the car off.
I just purchased a reman alternator, have installed a new battery. My alternator's output is still reading 14.58v. Per GARYS 68 last comment to me was that I may have corrosion or split. any suggestions where I can look for the corrosion?
IT IS FIXED!!!!!!!!!! Replaced the gauge and but find out you need to use the new ceramic resistor that comes with the new gauge. Gauge is not consisent with what the alternator is putting out. Thank you to all for your assistence. This forum is excellent!! Have a great Holiday weekend.
