 I know it's probably a stupid question but should i buy the vinyl prep in the spray cans and spray the color with the gun or just buy all spray cans? Then should there be a clear coat on the DK saddle after the paint??? If someone would just tell me the proper way it would help greatly
Re: Interior Dye ,Spray Can or by the quart (71DropTop)
I like to use an auto touch up gun. Spray cans are never as good as good spray equipment. Controlability is the issue when doing touch up work, although some people are very good with spray cans.
Re: Interior Dye ,Spray Can or by the quart (71DropTop)
I used the spray cans. The seceret is to do a good job clraning and preping the parts. Then spray several light laters. This dye goes on like water and won't cover in the few coats.
I keep a can around for touch up , I havent had any needto use it for a year.
Re: Interior Dye ,Spray Can or by the quart (utahrookie)
If you're doing several parts, and you have a gun, I recommend the quart. You end up using a LOT of thin coats, and the cans dont last too long. I did a shifter console and a e-brake console with one can, but I would have liked another coat or two.
Re: Interior Dye ,Spray Can or by the quart (71DropTop)
I did mine with cans. I have to do the dash still, but overall its taken 2 cans of vinyl/plastic paint, and one can of metal/plastic paint(for the console and shifter ****, steering column, etc). I think I can do the dash in one can.
But just a word of advice, if you use the vinyl paint on the E-brake cover, don't put any tape over it after its dry. I did that trying to mask off my e-brake handle, and when I pulled the tape up, most of my paint came up with it, it almost looks like the paint creates a plastic "film" over the part, and now I can keep pulling it off.
I'll have to redo that part tomarrow...hopefully I can do it in the car, cus i really disslike taking it out of the car.

I used 2 quarts when I sprayed all my interior parts, it took almost both quarts to do everything but the seats. I put several coats on to be sure everything was coated good.

Re: Interior Dye ,Spray Can or by the quart (paul79)
I thought it lifted because I put vinyl paint on a plastic-like peice. The paint I used was for vinyl/fabic. Apparently it can be used on carpet too.
I havn't had any problems on any other peices...and I think the big thing was I put tape on it(good tape)...If I continue to run into problems, I'll strip all that paint off, and redo it with the mid america/ecklers catalogue stuff...But hopefully at that time, I'll have all my peices replaced(going to do it slowly)
Re: Interior Dye ,Spray Can or by the quart (71DropTop)
I did all mine with spray cans. BUT next time, I would use a spray gun for a couple of reasons. The cost of all the cans was probably more than buying a couple of qts or a gal. I really think I did not get the same mix batch when I bought the cans. Some of them were a shade different, but was only noticable if the pieces fit against each other.
Re: Interior Dye ,Spray Can or by the quart (71DropTop)
NJ74Stingray(Frank) used this plastic gun type piece that attached to the top of the spray can.
He did many interior pieces and told me this plastic piece is great.
More spray control.
Plus it only costs about $3.
Re: Interior Dye ,Spray Can or by the quart (KenSny)
I've used both. The spray cans are thinned WAY too much. Takes too many coats and chips easier on plastic parts. The color is slightly lighter from spray cans. Using quarts is cheaper and looks MUCH better.
Re: Interior Dye ,Spray Can or by the quart (71DropTop)
I buy it by the quart and shoot it with my gun. If memory serves, the directions on the can said to shoot it like lacquer. I did that and got good results.
