It's slow and a bitch to modify, but it's the only C3 shark you'll find with (electronic) fuel injection and a 4-speed overdrive automatic from the factory. There's always been an aura of the CrossFire being a POS, but in reality it's a pretty sharp system if you take the time to learn about it, and I have one of the best resources on the 'net for it. http://www.crossfire.webhop.net

If you want a nice cruiser, the '82 is great.. very comfy.

Hello 84fiero
If you don't mind some info from a newby (bought in july) I will tell you about what I like about my 82.
First off it's a vette not a fiero :lol: :lol: :lol:
Ok enough of the lame humor, the ride is really nice compared to all the other c3's I rode in, some call it the most civilized ride out of all of the C3's.I guess that you could also say that it was the cruizer of the bunch. As for the crossfire injection mine has worked flawless, and it appear's to be original just the way the factory rolled it out the door.
Now if you hear anyone call it a cease fire, or tell you that they are a piece of crap, then ask them how many of them they have owned. So far the answer that I get back is "that is what they were told"
Here's the info that I have on the 1982
Performance
0-60...8.1 Sec.
Quarter Mile...15.9 sec at 86 mph
Top Speed..125..(i have already beat this statistic)
Lateral Acceleration (g)...0.82
Braking 70-0...194 ft.
L83 Engine
Displacement...350 CID
Horsepower...200 @ 4200 rpm
Torque (lb-ft)...285 @ 2800 rpm
Redline...5700 rpm
Compression Ratio...9.0:1
Curb Weight...3300 lbs.

If you are like me then you won't mind the computer or the injectors. I can work on them if I need to. Also the web site above has some great info on hopping up this stuff if you want to. And having the 700R4 tranny lets you cruize down the highway at 75 mph. turning only 2000 rpm.
Hope this is some help, I am really happy with mine... :) :) :)

Owner of 82 CE

Your repy information is correct, the 82 was the lowest HP (200) rating of all Vettes.

I have modified mine to close to 300 HP, not difficult to do and not particuarly expensive.

If you want a fast vette buy a 76, if you want a civilized Vette buy an 82.

Not really 100% correct info........starting in '75 there were some that only had 165 hp but even at 200 hp they still weren't power houses but neither were the other cars of that era.

Hi,

I bought an 82 this past May....I knew the original owner. He is my best friends dad....I was there when he brought it home. As far as reliability, its got 95K miles and has never left him or me stranded. Well except for that time the coil went south. The injection system has never been touched on this car except to have the TBs synchronized. I do wish it was a little easier to modify. But I did find a great wrench that knows the system.The ride is comfy and I love the way it looks.

I've owned my 1982 for over a year now. As with any older vehicle, it has its share of problems every now any then, but as for the Crossfire system, I can't say I have had a single problem with it. The only problem I had was a couple sensors not at 100%, but after replacement, everything was fine. The Crossfire system takes some knowledge, skill, and patience to modify, as there aren't any bolt on parts for the system. Check out the Crossfire forum, and my signature block and you will see some of the ways to modify the system. Most of the modifications are cheap and easy (such as injector tower spacers, 85+ TPI fuel pump swap, fuel pressure increase, and swirl plate removal), while others are very technical and hard (such as the 7747 ECM swap and boring the throttle bodies to 2 inches). Even in stock form, it's a overall very nice driving machine, with plenty of low-end torque.

Have to agree with Casper.
Here are some "facts" about hp and the C3. Prior to 1972, hp was measured as gross hp, not net (hp at the drive wheels). The base engine in 1971 was rated @ 270 hp. The very same engine in 1972 was rated @ 200 hp, so you see there is a big difference between gross hp and net hp. Most corvettes went out the door with the base engine. Here are the base/op sb hp rateings begining in 1972.

Base/L48---------------------- LT1

1972=200 hp........................255 hp

L48-----------------------------L82

1973=190 hp.........................250 hp
1974=195 hp.........................250 hp
1975=165 hp.........................205 hp
1976=180 hp.........................210 hp
1977=180 hp.........................210 hp
1978=185 hp.........................220 hp
1979=195 hp.........................225 hp
1980=190 hp.........................230 hp
1981=190 hp...........................N/A
1982=200 hp...........................N/A

So you see the 82 had the same or more hp than all the base optioned vettes produced the previous 10yrs and was in the running with a lot of the L82 cars.
I have found the crossfire setup very reliable and with the 4sp auto trans it's quick off the line and a great highway cruiser.
The only downside is if your looking to mod the engine for increased hp. This can be difficult but there are groups doing it and aftermarket co's looking into it.
The best advice I can give is buy the best car you can afford and look around at a lot of cars to judge condition and price in your area.
Good Luck !!

What did the list of mods do for you 82???

I want to increase the output of mine but try to keep it looking stock. some of the mods you listed will be invisible and that is what I'm looking for.

So my question is which ones are the best for what I want to do???
And where is the pictures?

Sorry for the delayed response. It's hard to tell exactly in numbers what my mods did for my 82, because I don't have any dyno numbers or track times to show. However, there is definately a difference. The engine now pulls hard up to 4800 rpm. Most of my modifications are small, and only result in slight increases, but they all add up to be quite significant. My Jet Hot Coated sidemount system headers just arrive two days ago (after waiting 4 months). The coated headers/sidepipes along with the STS stainless steel baffles will provide the greatest hp increase of all my modifications. I will be installing them the first or second week of November. Of the mods I have done already, I would have to say the fuel pump swap along with raising the fuel pressure provided the more noticeable change. I also had a noticeable gain when I removed the smog pump belt and the outer pulley which is on the water pump (the rest will be removed when I trash the old exhaust system in a couple weeks). I just removed the swirl plates the other day, and I would have to say that in particular made the largest difference. The engine still pulled hard to 4800 rpm (limited by the small intake ports), but when it shifted from 1st to 2nd the rear end kicked out as the wheels broke lose. There was definately a gain in the mid to upper rpm range. All these mods are cheap, easy, and really hard to notice. I'll post the results of my head milling/porting (heads and manifold)/header/sidepipe/etc. modification when I have it all back together.

I am going to go out on a limb and say that the 8.1 and 15.9 times for stock L83s are slow. The car probably does a half second faster to 60 when the brake is loaded and the same for the quarter.

It is important to not that even though the '82s have a 3.07 first gear, the General saw fit to put a 2.73 in the rear. Not a drag strip ratio by any stretch. Even if the relatively mild 3.55 from my 1980 was in the '82, it would have a total gearing of 10.90 in 1st.

Add that to the fact that the L83 had the most torque of any Vette engine post 454 until the L98, then you have a car that even in stock form has the potential to get up and go at a respectable rate.

Besides, the 1982 CE was the most beautiful Corvette ever made. :cheers:

My mods are port matched manifold, injector spacers, tbi spacers (controversial to those who haven't done it), raised fuel pressure, dynamod, dui coil, livewires, hiflo cat, borlas, no smog, no intake flapper, open air cleaners, advanced timing. I am easily under 7 in 0-60. More like 6.7 or 6.6.

150,000 miles and counting. Driven hard, everyday. Never a crossfire problem.

Thanks for the reply's. I think the first thing I am going to try is to remove the swirl plate's, like I said, I want to try to keep it as stock as possible.
So most of the other mods are out. I'm going to try to keep it going fast by small mods and good tunning.
I don't want a screaming monster (yet ). :crazy:
