Default gearing question

hi guys, new to this forum but I'm sure I'll be here quit a bit, seems to be a lot of good info.
my question is what gearing are you guys running? I have a 68 with a 450 hp motor and a doug nash 5 speed. I have 4:11 in it right now but feel it to low. on the 5 speed 5th gear is 1:1 and first is a bit lower then stock. The motor is more of a high reving type. It was built for a circel track car.
I'm thinking more like 3:55 but just wondering what other guys are running.
this is not at all a daily driver, more of a fun little drive to the beach car on the weekends, and raise a little hell on the way!

Welcome to the Forum, My Daughter Graduated from UCSC last year.

The 3.55 gear may be OK but A 3.70 rear gear is my 2centavos worth. That was used for the c3 4sp cars. The automatic optioned C3's used lesser rear gears 3.08 and 3.38 .
Also The 3.70 is fine for 5sp and 6sp cars with O.D. Gears . Helps keep Power building even after shifting to .62 OD. The heads and Cam also need to be matched for this to work well.
I use a 3.70 gear W/ a Richmond 6sp...... (Trivia) Richmond Bought Doug Nash Trans. along time ago....... Its OK ..the .62 OD gear is pretty dead until 4K rpms , So I went ahead and upgraded the engine with more Low end torque so it would pull at 70-80-90mph.
Good Luck..
If you have time ,Post your Upgrades and results

Default 4.11 All The Way

Most every thing with HP was ordered with a 4 series carrier. Thats just the way it was before minimum mileage was mandated by the GUV`s........

Best way is to *back into * it and figure final drive in 4th. Like when I had a Nash and 3.36's...my final drive in 4th was 4.13. I later changed to 3.07 and that gave me 3.78. I currently have a G-Force trans..same overall general idea as the Richmond/Nash..just a lot stronger. Now I've got a final drive of 4.08. I'm about to re-gear it to be up in the 4.20-4.40 range.

Anyway, figure out what you would like for a final drive at WOT...like at the end of the 1/4 mile....then consider 5th as O/D....even though it's 1 to 1...just using a lot higher rear gears.

If your not happy with a 4.11 on the highway or your first
gear feels to low, a 3.73 will probably not be enough of a
change to make you happy. 3.55 is a good compromis gear
for highway driving and should still work well for a shorter
power band engine with five gears to work with.
