In about another week I'll have the Corvette back on the road. I had a Powermaster mini-starter prior to the one I just ordered. The Powermaster one went out so I had to order another one. I purchased a Pro Comp Electronics "denso style" mini starter for $78.00 shipped to my house (it's a brand new starter).
My first question is did I get a decent deal on the starter? My second question is what's a "denso style" starter? I know it's a 4.4:1 gear reduction starter with 2HP.

Ebay seller Whiteperformance ??? Looks just like the one that I bought - haven't cranked the engine yet, hope that thing works, it was almost too good of a deal at $80 shipped

Got mine from Skip White on E-bay and it is great! God bless, Sensei
I bought a 3.5 HP mini starter on Ebay for $99 (including shipping)
I had a $140 Summit 2 HP starter on the old engine which is good to about 12.5 : 1 compression.. My new engine will have about 14:1 compression and I needed a powerful starter.. Haven't used it yet..
It will be a good one. Nippondenso builds good stuff. The gear drive etc will likely never wear out. Only thing that ever messes up is the contacts.....and that is after a LOONNNGGGG time. You can buy repair kits for solenoid for about $15.
Is it *clockable* where you can spin it around on the adapter plate? That really helps oil pan and header clearance issues. Mine is a cheap basic Summit just like it and it's been cranking the 540 for years.
Jim:
Yes the starter is clockable. Seems like the starter should work fine with my modest 11:1.
Gkull:
The powermaster still works but whenever it was shipped to me originally the terminal had taken an impact during shipping and busted the plastic. I was removing the battery cable one day and the whole terminal came out. Rather than mess with it I threw my stock starter from my 350 in (which still cranks over the 11:1 motor). I'm getting anxious to pull the Corvette out so I just bought a whole new unit.
Hitatchi and Nippon Denso make the best quality starters. Pro Comp brand is usually Mainland China in origin perhaps they have now started to copy the Japaniese brands. Powermaster and ONE of the Summit mini-starters are Hitachi based and excellent quality. I am using a Delco/Denso starter for a 1988 Corvette on my car but just scored a NASCAR Denso with a cool stainless steel heat shield off Ebay for the next motor (also a Delphi 100amp race alternator for $75 brand new!)
