Headlights, bulbs, and wiring stuff :)
- Do the low beams stay on when you hit your high beams? My buggers turn off, it doesn't seem right?
- for those of you who have halogen conversions, what bulbs are you using? I just picked up some nice lenses and need bulbs, but I don't know how to go about determining which I need (I seem to think that I need 2 low beam bulbs, and 2 high beam bulbs?)
- is there a wiring schematic for the headlights somewhere, as I had to rewire everything myself due to previous owner Harry Hamfist tearing out wires with reckless abandon.
-also, someone here has wired his so that all 4 lows come on and he has no highs. I forgot who he was, and I may not have searched properly?
Lastly, THANKS for all the help, I aplogize for not being more frequent, but I'm so busy at work and home that I only have a few moments to surf
Cheers,
Jeff
LOL
I need to rewire the whole thing anyways, this seems like it would do the trick
I just bought some from Del City (be aware that they have a $25 minimum order, as do most every other internet webstores). I'd advise getting their #73994 which is skirted. You can get a pre-wired harness that will fit within the skirt from NAPA (I can get you the NAPA P/N if you need it).
Here's a link to Del City: http://www.delcity.net/delcity/servl...d=73582&page=1
I'd also advise that before you plug in the harness to the relay, squirt dielectric grease into each socket in the harness (this will keep the contacts from corroding, keep water out, and also make it easier to insert and remove the harness into and from the relay). You also want to mount the relay in an area that will minimize the relay's water exposure.
As far as halogens are concerned, I just replaced my regular headlights with halogen lamps (Sylvania, IIRC) that I bought from Autozone - no extra "conversion" steps were required. But, using a relay circuit to power the headlamps is a definite safety upgrade (I plan to do it to my Vettes in the near future), and if you already are going to rewire your headlamps anyway, then by all means make this modification at the same time.
Although I haven't done this myself, I believe that if you want to have all 4 lights always on, and using the schematic above, just cut the yellow wire and splice it onto the green wire so that both wires feed terminal 86 on the relay (i.e., regardless of which circuit is active [hi or low beam circuit], all four lamps will get power) - and, of course, you'd only need one relay.
Oh, and by the way - yes, when you turn the high beams on, the low beams stay on as well (you can see in the schematic above that the green trace, which is the high beam circuit, feeds all four lamps).
HTH!
