Default Help removing rear rotor from hub, please!

Guys and Gals,

I just finished replacing my front rotors and calipers - job went well. I'm now on to my rears...
but I'm fearful that my rotors will stick to my hubs as they did on my fronts. On my fronts,
I just gently :smash: tapped the hub out of the rotor once I removed the assembly from the
spindle. But, being a C3 newbie, I'm a little confused on the rear bearing/spindle set-up. When I
drill out the rivets and tap them through the hub, I'm then committed to getting the rotor off, right?
But what are my options if the rotor sticks to the hub as they did on my fronts? I'll then have five
rivet chunks floating around in my rotor! :cry (BTW, this is a '71 with 40K miles, and judging from
the fronts, there was not too much maintenance done on the rotors/brakes/bearings.)

Thanks!

Hank

Calm down man!

As soon as you have drilled and hammered the rivets the rear rotor shall come from the spindle.
If this is not the case, use copper or wood hammer and bang the Disc every 2 inches and turn it around.
It soon will come off then!

Be careful not to angle the disc too much when using the hammer!!!
Be tender to your Baby!!! :D

Don't forget to mark the position of the rotors if this is the firat time they are being removed.

Sure your rotors aren’t hanging up on the parking brake shoes?

I haven't actually tried to pull the rear rotors yet. I was concerned beacuse my
front rotors were rusted to the hubs very tightly - and if I can't separate the
rear rotors from the hub while on the car, then how do I proceed? (I will
try the suggestions from the previous posts this weekend). If I can't get
the rotors off, then I can't drive with the rivet heads floating in the rotor... and
I would prefer not to tear apart the entire wheel bearing assembly until later
this winter.

All that is required to remove your rear rotor is to drill out the heads of the rivets - not the entire rivet and install a bearing puller with very light pressure the rotor will come right off - it's a matter of leverage. Some WD-40 and a few light taps with a hammer will help speed the process. You than can remove the remainder of the rivets after rotor removal.

My rotor was rusted on. I got it off the following way -- Take off the brake caliper, and put the caliper bolts back in the threaded holes and torque them in. The calipers are thick and so w/o the calipers those bolts will hit the rotor, pushing it off. Obviously, use a small piece of wood or something to avoid damaging the rotor! :) This revelation came to me after spending days trying to rig up a puller (hard to find one big enough and I wasn't willing to drop that much money).. The rotor that didn't budge (and boy did I smack at it) popped right off.

Great idea - thanks! I'll try that this weekend if the rotors don't come off any easier
than the front ones did.
