I went to take my friend to lunch today -- he has a turbo 300ZX that he thinks is pretty powerful. I was doing a nice burnout to show him how sports cars should behave and about 30 or 40 feet into the burnout, one of my universal joints broke. It was on the inside left. The only damage I can see is that it knocked a hole in my battery box. Also, I had some oil dripping so it may have also broken my diff cover. Might be time for one of the heavy duty covers. By the way, yes, I did have u-joints with zerk fittings and, yes, it did break at the zerk fitting.
What should I buy for u-joints? I am going to replace them all now.
Kind of embarasing riding in the tow truck past my neighbor up the street that has a newer C3 :bb
My girlfriend (5´2" / 45 Kg) seems to have a real lead foot:
She did a burnout with her Vette 2 years ago and ***BANG*** the Yoke was torn off inside (!) the positraction cage!!!
Was quite a fun to find out what the problem was!
We had to press out the odd piece inside of the posi cage - I kept the evidence for her to show her what this little foot in high heels can do to an innocent Vette!!!
I´ll see if I can find some pics of the evidence to post!
Embarrass me? Nah, we have been friends for a lot of years. He just put on a very empathetic smile and said how sorry he was.
Now sitting beside the road at a busy onramp to the freeway, that was a bit more embarrassing :yesnod:
Muskegon brake for the diff cover, right?
I took a look at it and both of the upper mounting flanges on the diff are broken. Also, the bolts are broken off in the yoke in three places -- I should be able to get them out. My half shaft appears fine. There is a big gash in the battery box but I can fix that. There is also a dent in the cross member that the diff bolts to. I think it will be OK, but I will probably weld a reinforcement on it just in case.
Atta boy! Here's a little bit to make 'ya feel better. '64 GTO witha 400/auto set up with slicks. First the 10 bolt explodes so I go with a chevy 12 bolt posi. then the axle goes so it's a set of Henrys axles to solve that! Next, I drop a drive shaft (twisted it like a pretzel) so upgrade that. Sooo, I bust a trans case! Darn! I finally busted a crank and went to a steel unit and it was fine after that, running consistent 12.20's. See, it's not so bad, really.... Have fun.
I replaced all of my U-joints earlier in the year with brute force U-joints. They have synthetic grease in them and are non-greasable. They even look tough.
I did the all brute force change from autozone as well. One minor set back was I had to take and exchange one of the 6 joints I got since it was missing needle bearings on two of the caps. Check em all good. One of the caps was missing maybe two rollers and the other at least 6 or 8. Thier brows really went up when I showed them that. Im cursed with getting bad parts to often it seems.
