Default upper ball joints on my 82

Hello everyone! I purchased an 82 vette about a year ago and i'm now rebuilding the front suspension. It's been close to 30 years since I've done this kind of work on my own cars but it's slowly coming back to me. My question is about the top ball joint not sitting flush with the A-arm. There is about a 1/8" space between the A-arm and the ball joint mounting base. Does the ball joint have to be pressed in? Any help will be appreciated.

Is the rubber boot holding it up?
I had to remove the boot, bolt in the ball joint, then put the boot back on.

No, I haven't tried to force it in yet. I tightened the bolts down to specs and saw the gap was there.

The rivets are out. The A-arms are off the car and the bushings have been replaced. I was installing the new ball joints w/bolts and was ready to put the A-arms back on the car.
