Default Lxx Questions?

Concidering stepping into the new milenium
Been shopping ebay, used engine/tranny packages out there from $1000 to $5000. What is the diff between LSx and LTx, 1, 2, 3....6?
Very confusing

TIA

I'll add a little more.
LSx motors have a completely new architecture then the previous chevy small block which dates back to 55 (original 265). All aluminum block and heads. Plastic intake. Much more fuel efficient then previous designs. Will not bolt in directly to older cars.
LS1- 346 cu.in. (5.7L) first found in 97 vette, 98 camaro/firebird. Anywhere from 320 to 350 hp depending on year and application. Highest horsepower in vettes. 345 hp from 97 to 2000. 350hp from 01 to 04.
LS6 - 346 cu.in (5.7L)found in 01-04 Z06. 385 hp in 01, 405 hp from 02-04. Revised heads with special valves (sodium filled) and higher lift cams, with a titanium exhaust.
LS2 - 6.0 L. New in 05 base vettes. 400 hp.
LS7 - 427 cu.in. 505 hp. 06 ZO6 to present Z06. Based on C5R & C6R race motors.

LTx motors. Different design of upper end, using same bottom end.
LT1 - first showed up in 92 vettes. 300 hp. Direct bolt in available to older vehicles.
LT4 - 96 Grandsport application. 330 hp. Different heads, intake and cam.

Hope this helps.

1998 LS1 engines had a lot of problems with piston slap... 1999 and up don't

The LS1 is getting more and more affordable, engine and trans incl. the wiring harniss and computer/AC compr/other accessories are about 2500-3000 for auto trans and 3000-4000 for a 6speed

Bone stock the LS1 is a great engine, aftermarket performance parts are very expensive compared to older 350s.... the coils for example are 500-600, intakes are $500, heads are $2000 and up....

My 2003 has a slight piston slap when cold. Goes away in 1 minute. The class action suit states 2004 was the solution.

Could that be a lifter ? Try some MarvelMystery Oil ...

According to LS1tech.com they changed the piston to wall clearance in late 1998 or 1999..... my '99 Z28 is fine....

This one is 2003, 78,000 miles. Just started recently, only when cold outside, and just for 1 minute.

If you look into almost any brand, Japanese, European or domestic you will find horror stories about reliability and defects.

So, an LS2 or LS7 would be pretty much the catz azz, are they both small blocks? or is that a SO 80's term?
So what does this have to do with Gen1, 2, etc...
I figured out Gen 1 is what I have now,as do most of the rest of you guys
Will the other gens, LS2, 7 ets bolt up to existing Tranny or does it have to be a 4L60? Wondering about the bolt patterns.
I may snag one of these motor/tranny packages for a later upgrade, plan on getting the car back on the road for a while before an engine project like this

Yeh, me too, 6'....I just dreaming and started a similar thread of finding out perzactly what these new engines can do for me, and what's involved....obvious things are well, obvious.....but it's the bellhousings/cranks/ accessories, etc....that's where the money can get stupid allready....solving 'simple' mechanical crap....

LS2 and later are the way to go now. Once the Camaro comes out there will be alot more donors. BTW, the LS1 and LS2 are basically the same except for a few changes in sensors and sensor location.

Also don't forget about the cast iron version in the trucks and suv's.

If money is not a problem then I agree with the LS2

If you want a half way affordable engine then get the LS1. It is very affordable if you're happy with the stock engine, complete take out engine/trans combos are on Fleebay all the time.

It is getting expensive if you want more power from your LS1. If you have a high milage LS1 that you want to bore and stroke (they make nice 383 kits for the LS1), upgrade the cam and the heads ... well, check out these prices yourself... that's about as expensive as a LS2, maybe more....
