Default Need new exhaust...

So I'm going to be putting my car back together soon and I don't want to put the old hack job exhaust back on. So I'm gonna do a 2.5 inch but I'm not sure if I should do a h pipe or just go true duals. I also can't decide on what mufflers to get. I was looking the the dynomax race bullets but I'm afraid they will be to loud. Any sugjestions?

True duals is the way to go. Get rid of the cat and free up some horsepower.

As far as mufflers go, it depends on the sound you want. If you want a mellow sound, go with Magnaflow. If you want louder, muscle car sound, go with Flowmaster.

If you want to go deaf and make the ground shake under your car...go with chambered exhaust.

I went 2 1/2" with the Magnaflows. I put about 30-40 miles on her today and I never turned on the radio once.........

DEFINITLY put on true duals with an H-pipe. I live in Columbus, MN, just SW of Forest Lake. I can give you the name of a couple of shops that will bend and install custom pipes and great mufflers. That's what I had done on my '80. PM me if you can't find a shop in IGH that will bend pipes for you, but the shops I know of are in Spring Lake Park and Circle Pines.

Ok, So true duals with an H-pipe. My previous exhaust sytem was also true dual no cats . But it was 2 inch. There was no H-pipe either. Still can't decide on a muffler.

My pipes are 2 1/2" with Flo-Pro mufflers. They sound great, have low back pressure, and cost a lot less than big name mufflers. Let me know if you're going to be north of St. Paul some time. You can walk under my car to look at the exhaust and hear how it sounds.

I know there is some performance gain using an H pipe, but I really like the sound of having two separate pipes. What is other people's thoughts on this?

You can have a look here to see what a chambered system sounds like. Its the 2 1/2 setup from Mid America. I love the burble at idle.

I had separate pipes and then added an H-pipe last summer. I like the smooth, even rumble with an H-pipe a lot more than the uneven rumble between and from each pipe without.

I added the H-pipe at the same time I switched from block huggers to full-length ceramic headers, so I really can't say how much performance gain was from the headers and how much was from the H-pipe. I do know that the combination is really obvious on the butt-o-meter.

The jets on my Holley were just fine until I switched to full length headers and H-pipe. Now I need to install bigger jets to keep up with the increased air flow after the new exhaust.

I vote for making the ground shake. I will be ordering Allen's Chambered exhaust for my car shortly.

I was looking at allen's setups and the chambered exhaust only goes up to 74. I would suppose because of emmisions regulations. Could I just slap that on my 78 and cut the front of the pipes to put on header adapters?

I have the Dynomax race bullets- the are basically inexpensive, straight thru, glass packs, in an aluminized tube. They are loud, but quieter than running straight pipes. I recommend that you look at and listen to several exhaust systems on a C3, before you spend the bucks. The sound, especially, is very subjective. One guys symphony is another guys rap music.

I have been listening around and I agree about the subjective sound. How do the race bullets sound? Are they better sounding then straight pipes? Or are they just really abnoxious? I've heard a couple sound clips of vettes with race bullets and I liked the sound. But I don't know the makeup of the rest of the system. Like pipe size and cats or no cats.
