With respect to it purpous of cleaning the exaust, is there an average life expectancy for a typical cat convertor in miles? This is assuming that the vehicle was kept in relitivly good tune throughout its life.
Would a cat convertor with 145,000 miles on it be expected to be somewhat less efficient at cleaning the exaust then a new one? Again this is assuming that there was not ever a serious miss tune condition that would have led to its early demise.
Thanks for the input. The state is gonna make me spend the $ for failing emmisions twice. So far ive got new plugs , new wires, new EGR valve, new air filter and oil change, and ignition timing set. 86 2.5L 4 with TBI The engine is clean inside and always has been. It just barely failed the second time. Sorry to take up space with a non-vette issue. I just appreciate the opinions of this forums members.
Re: Caytaletic convertor life expectancy (Jvette73)
we have cars in our fleet at work police cars and detective cars that have 150,000 miles on them and we havent changed a converter yet..if its running right they last a long time, when you start having excessive rich or lean conditions is when they have problems....hope that helps..you guys have to test for nox if so what the number reading?
Re: Caytaletic convertor life expectancy (Jvette73)
Pat, I suppose that police and detictive cars as well as other gov vehicles dont have have to submit to these emmissions tests. My car runs just fine too. According to them, it just needs to be a tad bit cleaner to pass. Thats why I was wondering if a new convertor compared to my 145,000 mi one would help put me within the limits. This most recent time it failed the HC and NOx by only .2 GPM, whatever that means. Limits are 3.0 GPM for those catagories so I cunclude 3.2 is not a devastating flunk. Still they would cut me no slack even after all ive done so far. I must make the car pass or spend the required $200 on emmision related items before getting a waiver. Many of those items I listed before as having been already repaired were done prior to the first test so they wont give me credit for them. Man that place makes my blood pressure skyrocket. I was wondering if a high mileage convertor, even though the car still runs good, is not performing to par and converting gasses like it should.
Re: Caytaletic convertor life expectancy (Jvette73)
actually we still have to emissions test those cars and we sent one down today and it passed 105,000 on it..nox is affected by egr valve and catlytic converter, your very close to passing,,you try that stuff you add to tank that guarrantees passing ,i heard it works rather well.
Re: Caytaletic convertor life expectancy (Jvette73)
Do you have an air tube to the converter? If so check to see if the check valve is working properly and check to see if there are any leaks in the air tube. The air system is there to pump air in to increase the temp. so the converter works efficently. Good luck
