Default 74 Big Block question ?

Take a look at the pic below. See the lower water jacket hole between cylinders 2 and 4 AND the 3 jacket holes at the top. Why are they there? Does anyone know? When the head gasket is installed ... they are all closed by the gasket because the gasket does not have openings there. The felpro application states to use 8180PT2 which definitely closes off all 4 holes.

Some of the openings on the block deck end there. I think this is done for block cleaning on rebuild.

Not to worry,..bolt her up and go.

Is that a Fury in the background?

Thanks for your reply >

I wondered if the 4 holes were for servicing or flushing.....What made me wonder is the fact that the heads have matching holes. I hate it when I find stuff like that. Just bothered me that the gaskets close the 4 holes off.

Fury..?..as in Plymouth...1970 with a 440 / 4 speed ??? I WISH!

Nope...its a 70 GMC shortbed with a 350/350 - factory AC - 82,000 original miles >

Gee, and I thought it looked like the nose of a red Corvette.

I think they were needed for the casting process.
