can someone please tell me where the 4spd shifter on my m21 should be mounted....i took it in for a rebuild and the tranny shop questioned if frame mount was correct for that year v.s. tailshaft mount...plus the three mounting holes on tailshaft had one stripped, one cracked in half an one with broken bolt in it ...which led them to believe there had been a different shifter on it at one time mounted from the tailshaft bolt holes...also it is original trans with correct v.i.n. # stamped on it ...wonder what gives? any help from experience would be appreciated...thanks fred
The original shifter mounted on a bracket on the frame. Hurst shifters mounted directly on the transmission tail shaft. Sounds like someone was shifting real hard
thanks for info...one question though...am i better off to put the hurst shifter set up in?...motor rebuild currently being done shud yield apx 475 hp and i wonder if this will make old shifter location less dependable with that much torque and twist ?...would shifter be better off on trans??? thanks, fred
has anyone run a hurst shifter on their car that mounts on the tailshaft and what are pros and cons? is there eventually problems with the original style if you're running additional hp? since i'm rebuilding, now's the time to make the change and i can put a different tailshaft on before reinstall to remedy the bad mounting holes...whaddya think fred

The hurst shifter will provide better shifting since it moves with the transmission. It will transmit more vibration because it is directly attached to the trans. Not a problem for me
The original shifter was isolated by mounting to the frame. If you plan to change better to do it all at one time, IMHO
sounds like a good idea...will hurst shifter locate in correct spot in console...is there any downside to this or difficulty in install or maintenence issues?is it a better setup or is this one of those things better left alone...don't want to have to thread that tranny back out and in again once motor is back in...your thoughts/... thanks, fred

Shifters can be installed/uninstalled without removing the transmission. I removed my factory shifter and installed a Hurst Competition Plus. Getting the Hurst in was easier than getting the factory one out.
There is no issue with the shifter locating properly as long as you buy the installation kit for your transmission and year of Corvette. Mine fit perfectly.
The only problem I had was clearance between the 1-2 shift rod and the emergency brake pully bracket. I cut off a quarter inch of the rod and problem solved.
Personal preference, I like the Hurst shifters much more than any factory shifter. They are more precise, have shorter throws (travel between gears) and are generally less sloppy.
Maybe you can find a couple of locals, one who has a factory shifter in their C3 and one who has a Hurst and try them. Then you can pick your preference. Local Corvette club would be a good place to start.
sounds like i should seriously consider the hurst...does it mount to the three holes on the tailshaft, if so i need to get a new tailshaft since the holes in mine are bad ...thanks for info fred
