Default Another one of those brake problem threads.

Yup, you guessed it. I need a little help on trouble shooting my brakes. Went to replace all the pads and happend to get a little bit of a leak from my passenger front caliper. Sure enough after the leak the pedal went right to the floor. But my caliper hasent leaked since. Ive bled the heck out of the system and cant quite get it to go. I did notice my brake light comeing on and off. Could it be possible I STILL have air in my proportioning valve?

Probably in the caliper not the valve unless you had the line on the valve open, but definately got some air in there somewhere

a leak is never a good thing.....when you compressed the pistons to put the brake pads in did you master cylinder overflow?

ya the fluid level in the master cylinder raised and probly squirted a little bit of fluid out when the cap was off. But the caliper that had the itty bitty leak was grabbing when I tested it, making the car steer to the right. And still no more fluid from it.

Hmm, may have had some junk in the caliper that was making the piston stick. Kind of a scary thing. I am kind of a big proponent of rebuilding it if you don't know the status or if its doubtfull. I also like the VBP O-Ring conversion kit. Its cheap and a very good fix

i don't know how you would have gotten air in your proportioning valve.....perhaps the caliper that was leaking previously is sucking in air

Yeah, I dont know about the proportoining vavle one ... just the fact that the light was acting fugly threw me off. And the calipur isnt being gummed up by anything and sticking, its just grabing more than the others under what brake pressure I can put to it with the pedal.

Are they the original calipers? Mine was leaking from the right front caliper and pulled hard to the right when braking. I pulled the rotors, calipers, pads and master cylinder and replaced everything including the hoses to the calipers and the two rear steel lines to the back calipers. Everything on mine was original so I figured it's time to just do the whole thing right, and now it stops on a dime. Oh yeah, I also did the parking brakes on the rears, what a PITA that was.

The grabbing may not have to do with the stopping capacity of that particular caliper. If you got fluid or dirt on the rotor, the brakes pads will sometimes grab onto that fluid or dirt.

BTW, I also have a silver 76

No need to replace the entire system, especially if they were done sometime in the past. They may have the SS sleeves in the calipers. All you would need to do is dismantle the calipers, clean and paint and then reassemble with the o-ring kit, easy saturday job.
