Default Carb/Manifold advice

I am interested in replacing my rochester quadrajet and stock intake manifold in my 1973 coupe. I have headers and side exhaust already. I keep getting different opinions on which parts to use, so I thought I would tap into the expertise available in this forum. I am looking at a Edelbrock performer intake and a Holley 600 cfm carb. Problem is, I want more preformance than that coupling will provide. What would be the next step up in preformance from that combo? Will I need to change any other parts too? Cost is an issue. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for the support - hopefully 10 years from now when I have a clue, I can be of some assistance to another neophyte vette owner!

First, keep the Qjet, just make sure it is set up properly. It will out perform a 600 Holley.
You have headers and side pipes, cool.

Now you need to look into swapping out the original heads, the intake and cam.
What sort of power are you looking for? If you provide a little more details as to what you want from your car...you will get plenty of suggestions.

What is your mechanical knowledge/background? Are you comfortable in changing camshafts or rockers? What are you willing to spend?
Like the old saying goes:
Speed costs. How fast do you want to go?

Thanks for the response. Q-jet is not working well. I bought the car 1 month ao and it ran great. Took it out on the highway and opened it up........then it stalled (flooded?) and wouldn,t start for 2 days. Then it started and ran great until I leaned on it again, and it stalled. Now it smells of gas and is not running smoothly at all. Guess I will have the Q-jet rebuilt. ( car was garaged a long time before sale so I tried carb spray/fuel additives to no avail). Any idea on a good intake that the Q-jet will bolt onto? Eventually hoping to raise HP to around 350+ range.
Thanks again.........

Since the car was stored, you should get a rebuild on that q-jet. Several million people here on this forum swear by Lars' rebuilds. Check out the fuel system too. There's no telling what kind of crud is in the tank and lines. At the very least, replace the fuel filter.

Brett

EDIT: Oh yeah, do a full ignition system tune up too.

Here's one option. Holley Model 4165 PN 6210 spread bore double pumper, 650 cfm on a Weiand Action +Plus PN 8004 intake manifold. Uses stock air cleaner, choke, throttle linkage and fuel line.
