Default Torq COnverter Recomendations please

OK, this weekend I got my 2004R all reassembled and I need a converter so I can stick it on the motor. A couple weeks ago someone recomended a "D5" I think? I need a bit more info, what brand? Stall Speed, diameter etc..
Planning on running AFR180 heads and comp comp XR270HR roller cam and stock rear end for now
TIA

Figure out what the expected idle speed is so you can get a stall speed high enough it will still have some manners. Comp should be able to tell you that. After that, someone like Bowtie should be able to direct you.
Oh, and what's a D5? Some company's designation for their convertor?

I can't find the thread the mention of the D5 was in, so I am not sure what that is. I may call Comp in a bit, waiting on a few more replys to see what the consensus is

D5 converter is GM performance converter used in SS & GN. The factory stall speed is about 2200 RPM.

Thanks Marshrat.
I need a little education on these things, does it have 2 Lockup modes? Above 2400 rpms and with lockup solenoid turned on in the tranny?

No, just one lockup mode. Lockup is controlled electrically on the 2004R. Until energized, the TC will slip just like a regular stall. To put it another way, when I manually put my tranny in 3rd, the 2004 TC acts just like the one I had in my TH350. If I shift into 4th, the TC will lock about 50mph under moderate accelleration.

Man, these things are all over the place for price, $89 to $600
The guy I dealt with on Ebay for the rest of my trany parts had a High Stall for about $200. Any reason to spend more than that for a TC?

Look in your local phone book for tranny shops, then look for tranny parts suppliers. You may find a parts house somewhere close that can get you the right convertor and not have to pay shipping. I've used lots o rebuilt convertors and never had any problems. And if the guys at the parts house are sharp, you'll get that D5. Just tell them the application and they'll do the rest. And probably give you a choice between new & rebuilt

There are a couple of places in the KC area I deal with, but we're back to shipping- and convertors ain't light.

Get it local Danny. When they are defective, shipping is a nightmare.
