Default Update THURSDAY 5/17 re smoke issues with new 383...

Well after 2 new sets of heads, 2 new intakes, removing and angle milling the last intake....along with this week I added new valve covers with baffles, a pcv valve...drove for 10 miles tonight...still smoking.
In fact its worse than ever. I had drained the Vavolene 10-30 which had 1 PINT of LUCAS OIL TREATMENT that I added. To see if it slowed down the smoking (and it did) refilled with some sheap STP 10-30 wt.
Car runs good, temp is normal, oil pressure is good...but at idle it looks like a fogging machine, mostly on the drivers side......
I think I have exhasted every possible cause of oil entering the engine, other than past the rings. I may drive it some Friday and see if it improves. I changed the oil to get the super slippery Lucas oil out to see if I could get the rings to seat (if that is the probelm)....and it seems clear there is is a problem in the bottom end. Time to yank it out and take back to the builder.

Would cheap oil cause an engine to smoke, I wouldn't think so...

Thanks to everyone for their help, ideas and support!! Mark

If it has to come back out anyway, why don't you run it for a few days and see if you can get a lot of that excess oil out of it and see if that helps.

What do you have to lose?

drive it for a while, like 50 to 75 miles and dont go too easy on it. if it works then you are in the clear if not then pull it out, but i would drive the crap out of it to make sure all the oil is out. i was told with my last rebuild to run it a few minutes get it warm and then change oil, then let it go for about 300 to 500 miles before the next change. the motor is still running strong and that was 150,000 miles ago. currently getting ready to rebuild it again just for fun.

Along w/ the good suggestions to verify good crankcase breathing ... Seems upside-down and/or broken ring(s) was fingered.

I run a bead of silicone along the bottom of the entire length of the intake gasket on bothe sides so no oil will get into the heads from the lifter valley if the angles of the intake and heads are not bang on. YOu might want to try that, milling the intake indicates you thought the angles were incorrect and maybe they still are

WHo built the short block? I'd have to suggest they either stacked the oil rings, or put all the gaps together. Even with good compression, if the oil rings aren't right it'll pump oil like no tomorrow..

Did you check valve lash? My #1 intake nut backed off about 1 year after start up....took me a while to find. #1 intake valve wasn't opening at all.

I had .010 removed to clean it up and to put a litle more clamping force on the bottom edge of the intake. I used a Mr Gasket Ultra Seal. Which has printoseal on both sides. Then I applied ULTRA GRAY slicone to both sides of the gasket...for added insurance for a good deal.

Engine has good vacuum, idle and runs too good to be runing on 7 cylinders...

Again thanks to everyone for their help and patience, Not trying to beat a dead horse. Had some time waiting for my hoist to come back, so like I said I exhausted every possible cause...Mark

Did you do a compression test and a leakdown test? If so and it checked out good I don't have any suggestions. Hope the builder figures it out. Good luck!

Me neither! I feel like I worked on it myself and am still pretty frustrated I couldn't figure it out.

Default Just my 2 cents

The piston oil ring separators have been overlapped, putting less pressure on the oil rings.

That'd be the "stacked rings" I was talking about.
