6 hours later I finally opened it up. I was having wheel wobble and could see the yokes moving in and out. Yoke end play is .07 and .05. There are no cracks and everything actually looks kinda good for a 37 year old car.
Also, for those of you wondering, there was no gasket on the cover and no leaks.
So what do you think? I plan on replacing the yokes. What else should I check?
In case you were wondering, I am also replacing the ujoints and the halfs and drive shafts. I haven't checked the beaings yet.
Replace the yokes, the left one looks worse. Check the cross shaft for wear, Spray some brake cleaner on the windows and cross shaft hole look for cracks, replace the hex head bolts with socket cap screws torque to 60 ft/lbs, check the pinion seal for leaks- mount it on a engine stand pointing down- put in a qt of cheap 90 wt oil let sit 24 hours. If no leak, use a Gm gasket and Ultra black drain the cheap oil out, add 2 bottles of GM additive since you have the springs, and use Lucas 85-140, drive the car and enjoy it.

Will do.
Are the yokes standard or heavy duty? It is a 308, 454/390, MT.
wheel wobble be more probable in trailing arms?, bearings, incorrect torque on castle nut?, bad trailing arm? Fallen shims? Just a thought
I agree that trailing arms, ujoints and bearings are all suspect. Going to check them all.
There is no wheel wobble while driving..at least from what I can tell. My wife followed me and said she didn't see any strange movement.
The wheel wobble occurs when moving the wheel at the 12/6 position while the car is on jackstands. It is when doing this that I can see the yoke moving in and out.
When grabbing the wheel at the 9/3 postion, there is no noticable wobble.
I haven't pulled the ujoints yet, but the cap movement is erratic, not smooth when turning. My guess bad needle bearings causing the joint to fail.
I think that my problem is a combination of yoke's and ujoints. But I am going to check the bearings.
my guess. Bearing related. Yokes are supposed to move, as you have already pointed out just a bit. Get the half shafts done and check the spindle for play with a gauge. I think it is between 4 and 8 thousands on my '70. When is last time the wheel bearings were greased? I have become a know it all since I have been doing both cars in this area for the last 3 months.

I put a dial caliper on it. .002 and .003. I am not going to mess with them other than to grease the inner bearing.
The joints on the passenger shaft are wasted. One is locked with no movement...going to do them all as well as driveshaft.
I have a full trailing arm overhaul planned for next winter.
If you really want to WAKE it up, call Tom's and get a set of 3.73's!!! Ask me how I know!!!
BTW...Gary set mine up!! (I'm too much of a Bubba to tackle that )
I had tall gears on my small block...I don't know what they were, but I liked them off the line. Shredding tires was fun. I like the 3.08 for the longggggg cruises. It still kicks azz though
