Default Reverse Lock Out help

I have a 70 coupe with a 4 speed. I have just reinstalled the transmission after changing out a clutch kit and the reverse lock out cable. The cable is installed but not hooked up to the steering column yet. I hooked up the linkage on the transmission and went in the car to run it through the gears. My problem is that I cannot get it into reverse. Is there a special way to install the reverse lock out t-handle with spring? I appreciate any help you all can give me. The weather is finally nice and hot here in Germany and it is time to get this baby on the road.

Which way did you put the spring in? The "T" handle goes in first, then the spring on top of that, then the ball. You might want to remove the T-handle and run it through the gear with out it just to be sure that's the problem. Did you adjust the linkages when you reinstalled it?

I slid the t-handle down first then the spring and then the shifter ball. With the t-handle out the shifter won't go into reverse either. I guess I am going to have to have the wife help me so I can crawl under the car and look at the linkages as she moves the shifter. I have a copy of the Chilton's manual on my computer and a copy of the assembly manual that I have out in the car. I thought maybe the shifter had to be in a specific position to drop the t-handle in to line everything up. Thanks for your help.
