I am going to build my own exhaust for my car, problem is I have never done this before. I have a mig welder and bought some stainless wire for it andI bought some 2 1/2 16 gauge stainless tubing and some mandrel bends. How close should the exhaust be from the floor? How many hangers should I have? Any other advice any once can give me?
the headers will tell you how close to the floor to put the pipes. then through the cross over and out the back to the muffler hangers. the only real place you need to adjust is under the rear axle and turning the mufflers if you have the spare tire tub in.
Try to keep the pipes at least 3/8" away from the floor. You need only hangers for the mufflers, the exhaust is supported mid-way by muffler clamps that fasten to a support bracket bolted the the rear of the transmission.
So, two muffler clamps and two mufflers hangers, assuming your system will be fully welded. I used extra jack stands, wood shims and a carpenters level to position the pipes to the level I wanted, then tacked them in place as I worked my way back.
The system shown is not stock, it uses 3" pipe and an aftermarket X-member, but maybe it will help you having some visuals.
I'm suprised with my own work, came out excellent. As for spacing to the bottom of the floor, I didnt worry too much, as you'll find its hard enough getting the pipes that close.
