Default Should a single degree in timing affect engine temp???

Yesterday I installed a Mr Gasket performance 180* stat. I took the car out on a long ride and it never got over 180* I also installed my JCL baffles (They were installed during the 180* ride.) which seemed to cause a rich condition. I tinkered with the idle and timing a little and got a steady 10" of vac @ idle and a pretty good idle around 950 RPM's. I backed the mix screws out 1\4" at all 4 corners. The affect of the timing was -1* from 18* adv to 17*. I then took the car out and could never get it to run under 210* and when I stopped at a light it quickly rose to 250* Needless to say I got it right home. I was so PO'ed that I quit messing with it.
Could a single degree of timing make that much of a difference??
For some reason did it just heat up when it was sitting after the first run and the cooling system could never catch back up??

WOW, I've never seen anybody install baffles during a drive

On a serious note.. I doubt that 1 degree of timing would have that kind of effect on engine temp..

1* won't affect it that much. It is something else.

Thinking that I may need to re program the fans. right now the low setting is kicking in at 160 and the high at 190. Thinking I need to have the high kicking in at 160. Thoughts???

I don't think that the fans coming on at 190 degrees is not your problem.. There has to be something else.. However, if the fans didn't come on at all would cause that kind of problem.. Are you sure that the fans were on when you hit 210+ degrees? They should have been on as you were above 190 degrees..

Having just replaced the thermostat I would be very suspicious of the new one working properly or air trapped in the system. Stupid question, you do have the t-stat in the right direction ????????

I vote for air, just about the only thing that will make the temp spike quick like that other than a complete failure, which you didn't mention. The temp sensor is in the head between the center cylinders and if an air pocket settles there even for a minute or two the temp will spike

was this carb set perfectly to the car before adding baffles and thermostat?
and what exactly made you think it was rich after the baffle install?

im no expert (like some of the guys on the forum so please dont bash my input) but it sounds like you may have leaned it out too much.

My fans cut on at low speed at 175-180. High speed kicks in at 200. That's what Tom suggested to me. Check that thermostat out.

I am going along with the crowd. I doubt that one degree of timing would effect the temp that much. However, trapped air could cause a temp spike.

Thanks for the input guys. I guess it is possible that an air pocket settled over the sensor or that I leaned it out to much. The stat was installed correctly and like I said, the first drive of the day which was about 45 minutes long and was after I installed the baffles and the stat the temp stayed steady at 180* never once going over. The fans were coming on yesterday at the proper temp in the driveway while I was setting and adjusting the carb and timing. the car never spit water out the over flow when it did spike which was different from last week when I hand an old stant thermostat installed.
