I'm about to replace the one I have, an aftermarket open air cleaner made of plastic. I don't know anything about it other than the "Made in Taiwan" sticker inside the base. I need a new one for a couple of reasons, what do you recommend?
I just made this one out of a Jeep Grand Cherokee hat, a carb air cleaner spacer cut down, an Alero intake tube, and a generic cone filter. It may not be what you're wanting though...just sharing.

Thats a clean lookin installation. I like it. Good job!
Actually, that's bad as hell. You must have spent a lot of time at the junkyard.

Thanks guys.
Actually it's all Ebay. I had the hat off of a Grand I parted out for the engine. The spacer is a stock GM Q-jet spacer cut down to 1.5". I had to trim the inside of the hat so the spacer's ridges fit correctly. The Alero intake tube fits almost perfectly on the mouth of the hat. I trimmed the end of the tube a bit where the filter fit inside it, and it tucked right down above the wheel well.
Since you have a 79 L82 you mght want to return to the oem dual snorkle set up with a K&N filter. You'll get more colder air than your currrent intake.

Really? Wow. After all I've heard about open air cleaners.

That's why I switched. I used to have a chrome setup like yours, but being at the top it pulls in nothing but hot air. With the draw up at the front where the fresh air is coming in your intake pulls a colder charge of air.

NICE set-up DB. Cold air is where it's at!....
I did the open air cleaner thing once back in the day only to find out
that it ran better with the stock set-up. And after K&N filters came out.......
This is the L-48 single snorkle version on mine............

Ooh, that's nice. Very clean my friend. Is that flex section hard to get? I have seen many that were have deteriorated and needed to be replaced.

It's a new one that's a repo...
Funny thing is it's better than the original! Old ones are made with some fiber crap that falls apart but the repos are rubber-like. Ecklers believe it or not........

Beautiful...
btw... The L82 setup had dual ducts. If you can find that one and put a K&N in it, that's about as good as it gets under a stock low profile hood.

That's a GREAT picture. If it were me, I'd frame it and keep it in my office (serious!). Mine isn't nearly that clean or detailed. I run the '80 L48/L82 dual snorkel setup on my L48 with the plastic ducting and newer underhood duct seals; most of the perishable items were replaced with pieces from Dr Rebuild. Oh, and K&N filter too.

Hot air from the radiator? It needs to be in front of the radiator to be more effective.

You and I have about the same set up. I have a 3" filter, tho. My bump in the hood made it happen. I see you had to loose the pretty wing nut, to.
