I was wondering if anyone has converted their points ignition over with one of those mallory unilite conversion kits? Any opinions on this product good or bad. Thanks in advance.
Been running the Mallory kit and Superstock coil for 18 mos without a problem. Suggest you open your plug gaps to .040 - .045 to take full advantage of the increased voltage. Despite what the instructions say, it's almost impossible to install without pulling the distributor, but a piece of cake if you do it on a bench. Probably a good time for a new cap, rotor and wires while you're at it.
I have installed the Mallory Unilite points conversion. It is excellent. Easier starts, better idle. Seems like the engine revved better afterwards. By the way, I made no other changes when I did the conversion, same spark plugs and same ignition wires, same cap and same rotor.
I did this a good 7-8 years ago and it has run great all that time. Just dont ever crank the engine with power to the module and the ground disconnected. Dont ask how I know this.
I have used the Mallory Unilite conversion since it first came out on the market (probably around 1976 or so). My first engine was a big block. Sure saved changing points and plugs, as often as big blocks used them. I am currently running the Unilite conversion in my '65 Convertible and my '67 Impala SS. I am trying out the Petronix in my '65 Coupe. If it works out, great !! Otherwise I will go to the tried and true Mallory Unilite.
Think about a Pertronix Ignitor II. I have heard good things about the Unilite. However, if memory serves me correctly it is optical (i.e. unilite as in light). Therefore, if your "eye"get dirty you will have probs. A friend just had that exact problem on the crate motor in his '65 camino.
The ingnitor operates on magnetic pulse. Now if the big one hits, I guess the MoneyPit will be in trouble, but if I remember the terminator movies correctly, post apocolyptic landscapes will be inhospitible to corvettes anyway.
The ingnitor II was a breeze to install, and is completely compatible with MSD type spark control devices and coils.

That is true, it is an LED that triggers the spark. Mine has been very trouble free. You really shouldn't ever get dirt inside your cap anyway, but I would imagine it could be cleaned (mine has never gotten dirty). Also, I am sure you could get replacement parts if you needed them. It's a very simple system, and I wish I had done it right away for the whole hundred bucks it costs. Would have done away (and has) with any points headaches.
I am running the Unilite in both my Vette and street rod. The one in the vette was a conversion from a Mallory dual point and the one in my street rod is a standard unilite distributor. I bought a spare module many years ago just in case, but have never needed it. Both Unilite modules are fine after about 15 years of use. I don't recall ever hearing of problems with the Unilite setups with other people, but I do seem to remember hearing several people having problems with the pertronix setup. That's not to imply that the Pertronix is not as good, but the Unilite has certainly prooven itself to me.
I did the unilite conversion about 8 months ago, really a piece of cake to do, I did end up pulling hte distributor but just mark your spots and no problems. Haven't had it long enough to judge long term reliability but from what I learned here before purchasing mine they seem to be extremely reliable and long lived.
I have ben using a Mallory unilite conversion for approx 3 years with no problems. I used the Mallory unit to replace an old Echlin electronic conversion kit that I had on the car for the last 12 years.
Last year I hooked up a MSD 6A box to the unilite. It was a an easy job. The 6A came with very clear instructions on how to do it.
