Default Alternator Upgrade

Hi all,

I've been reading about alternator upgrades for C3 and see that many recommend switching to a CS144 delco remy unit. Can anyone tell me where I can buy one? I'm looking for chrome also if possible, but not essential.

All my searches are throwing up powermaster etc etc and delco style, but not original units and I'm not too sure if these are as reliable as the delco unit is stated to be. Any searches in the UK are bringing up no results.

I'm looking for this to run dual spal fans that I have ordered, and to run halogen conversion lights that I have already done (without the relays - this is my next project!)

Would appreciate any help.

A CS144 is going to cost a lot new, and a chrome one will probably need a small loan to get.

If you have a local salvage yard I would suggest ripping one out of a later Cadillac. You can probably get one for $30 - $40. New they run close to $200.

Here is a polished unit. All you would have to do is change to a V-belt pulley and fan. You're upper adjustable mount might also need modification as the housing is a little different.

thanks durango

unfortunately salvage yards are a little hard to come by here in the UK. Ebay option looks good, will check it out.

Just out of curiosity how much would a new chrome one run?

Chrome ones are getting very hard to find since the alts are no longer on production cars and trucks. Only speed shops are doing it for hot rod guys like us.

I have seen chrome ones at $300 before. I have also seen them for half that. You just have to keep your eyes peeled and search everything.

I searched summit but only found one CS144 style alternator by powermaster. Anyone had any experience with these?

If you don't mind the Summit price then they are just as good as any other manufacturer. They are new, so that's added piece of mind.
