Default Steering box rebuilding

I took a replacement steering box apart to start rebuilding it. What should I look for in terms of wear and which vendor sells the best and most complete rebuild kit ?

Thanks

The kits are all pretty much the same. The sideplay in the bushings can be improved with the kit bushings but to get the best you'll need to fit custom bushings to about .002" Look to see if the bushings are grooved for oil travel,if so they are the originals, check the lash gap and set it for .002", set the box torque to 11in/lbs on center.

Then the box was not rebuild but probably just painted and greased. I've seen this crap work for years now. My brother in law has a 63 that a shop "restored" the box is all over the place,I'm going to correct it when he visits. Be sure the gears are good as well, I've found the lash so bad on some of these aftermarket jobs the gears had to be replaced.

Lash gap is in the unit. It is the gap between the lash screw and t slot of the pitman shaft. Should be under.002" but every single box I've opened up,( new, rebuilt, used) were in the .007-.010 range.
